Celebrate Mardi Gras at Literacy Council’s Books, Brews & Beads, at Makai

March 1, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Books Beads and Brew

Join the Brunswick County Literacy Council for a fun-packed evening of “Books, Brews &
Beads” Tuesday, March 1, at Makai Brewing Company in Ocean Isle Beach, and help
support Council programs that are changing lives in Brunswick County through adult
literacy.
The fun starts at 6 p.m. and the good times roll—or “laissez le bons temps rouler” as
they say on Bourbon Street—until 9 p.m., with live music, costume and best mask
contests, food, raffles, and a beer and wine cash bar.
Tickets are $35 in advance and $45 at the door and can be purchased online now at
http://www.bcliteracy.org or at the BCLC office, 282 Ocean Hwy East (Hwy 17), Supply, or at
the door the night of the event at Makai Brewing Co., 5850 Ocean Hwy West (Hwy 17),
Ocean Isle Beach.
Paul Grimshaw will keep revelers reveling the entire evening. He has been performing
as a soloist and with his band, The Paul Grimshaw Band, for more than 20 years at
venues all along the Grand Strand and North Carolina coast. Grimshaw is known for his
diverse song selection from oldies to classic to soft rock to country and all points in
between, and he’s sure to keep everyone moving and grooving.
Enjoy a cash bar with amazing craft brews from Makai Brewing Co. as well as their
typical wine selection. Makai has not only donated their space, but they will donate a
portion of the proceeds from the night to the Brunswick County Literacy Council.
Beach House Café in Sunset Beach is providing a mouthwatering, Cajun-inspired
spread featuring shrimp po’ boy sliders, Cajun chicken po’ boy sliders, crawfish
hushpuppies, collard greens & sweet potato cakes, Andouille sausage skewers, and
muffaletta melts. And it wouldn’t be Mardi Gras without the King cupcakes Art Catering is providing.

Books, Brews & Beads is just one of the fundraising initiatives and activities the Council has planned to achieve its mission of eradicating illiteracy among the many Brunswick County adults who lack the fundamental reading skills to reach their full potential. In addition to one-on-one adult basic literacy tutoring, the Council also offers help with GED preparation, English as a second language, citizenship, work/life skills, computer literacy, and financial literacy, all free of charge to county residents.

Upcoming Literacy Council events include the 32nd Annual Spelling Bee and Silent Auction May 24 at the BCC Virginia Williamson Event Center, and the 32nd Annual Golf Tournament Sept. 17 at Carolina National. Plan to save those dates now and keep watching for other events to come that offer other opportunities for a good time for a worthy cause
